Whilst I’m a big believer in making a commitment to yourself to do something and seeing it through, I’m also a realist.
When you decide to introduce, or re-introduce an activity into your lifestyle, it can be challenging to say the least, especially when you have work, family, life to deal with too. Whether that is a commitment to do 10 minutes of abdominal exercises every day, to make and drink a fresh juice every day, or walk with the children to school every day, it’s hard work to stick to it without any exceptions.
Imagine the scenario, “Hang on a minute there Billy, I’ll help you take your finger out of that electrical outlet just as soon as I’ve finished this one minute plank exercise that I have to do!” or “Sorry, Jo, I can’t come get you from soccer right now, even though it’s pouring with rain, freezing cold and dark, as I have to finish making my evening juice, and savor it’s deliciousness in mindful appreciation” or even “I’d love to come and learn about this fantastic new business opportunity, but I have to go to this yoga class and even though there is another one tomorrow that I could go to, I said I would go to this one so that’s what I MUST DO!!!!!, sorry life changing opportunity, catch you next time!!”
So, what do you do when your commitment to do something regularly misses a beat? My view is that you simply accept the fact that life’s not perfect, that everything will balance out, and that you will do what you can to renew the commitment to yourself tomorrow. One thing i’ve learned this year, is that the sun comes up every day, and you have a chance every single day to do be best you can be. So if you don’t make it to do your abs exercises today, don’t give up on the whole thing, just do them tomorrow. If you can’t get your juicer out today, then don’t go back to the old carton of orange juice, just make sure you get up a little earlier tomorrow and make this delicious recipe to get you going again!
